General Phillip Broyles is a Special Agent-in-Charge with the Department of Homeland Security. He leads the Fringe Division, a multi-agency task force with an overt mission of identifying, investigating and solving the expanding number of science-related crimes witnessed over the past few years.

Biography[]

Background information[]

Phillip is a Colonel who is eventually promoted to General. He was married to Diane Broyles until he became obsessed with the case of Aleks Vasiliev and they divorced. They had two children. ("Earthling")

Season Appearances[]

Season 1[]

Besides leading Fringe Division, Broyles is also a member, and perhaps leads, the Oversight Committee, a group involved in the highly classified investigation of The Pattern. He selected the members of the Science Team to assist in this endeavor. Initially somewhat reluctant to share information with Olivia Dunham, Broyles has been impressed with the results of her work and has come to trust her abilities, even to the point of considering her a superstar according to Sanford Harris.

Broyles appears to maintain a close business relationship with Nina Sharp, a member of the Oversight Committee and Chief Operating Officer of Massive Dynamic, but the nature of this relationship is unclear. Broyles hands-over to her a high-tech micro-disk recovered during the investigation, telling her "I'm sure you can understand why I don't want to go through channels."("The Ghost Network")

Later, Broyles confronts her, practically accusing her of being behind Olivia's abduction. ("Safe")

Seasons 2-4[]

Broyles continues to run the Fringe division of Homeland Security in the prime universe. He is divorced and committed to his world. He is promoted from Colonel to General after helping to save the world.

Meanwhile, in the Alternate Universe, he runs Fringe division. He is married with a sick son. Olivia Dunham saves his son from a serial killer. In turn, Broyles disobeys Walternate and helps Olivia escape to her own Prime Universe, hoping and believing in her promise to find a way to heal his decaying world. In punishment, Walternate has Broyles killed and utilizes his body mass to bring FauxLivia back to the Alternate world. (See Phillip Broyles (Alternate Universe))

In another timeline in the Alternate universe, Broyles’ allegiances are torn between his dying son and his duties. This makes him vulnerable to David Robert Jones. He is a traitor, but eventually he does the right thing.

Season 5[]

In the fifth season, year 2036, the Observers are tyrants, running the world. Humans are either Loyalists, serving the Observers, or passive natives, or part of the active Resistance. Broyles appears to work for Observer security, reporting to Captain Windmark, while actually he’s a covert leader of the Resistance. Henrietta Bishop / “Etta” knows who he is. His code name is Dove.

Eventually, Broyles greets Olivia, Peter, Walter in person. He provides weapons, including antimatter batons that, once armed, can't be deactivated. (The Bullet That Saved The World ). His final appearance is in the series finale, An Enemy of Fate.

Clearance Level[]

Phillip Broyles has a Clearance Level of level 4 concerning incidents related to The Pattern. He has knowledge of several Pattern related incidents which have been discovered by the US Department of Homeland Security. He intentionally withholds information from Olivia Dunham because "her determination to find the answers" is what makes her a good agent.

Alternate[]
