[edit] Biography

[edit] Season 1

Loeb, a close friend of Philip Broyles, collapsed in Broyles' office after the completion of a mission. After several attempts to revive him, he was operated on. During the operation, the surgeons discovered a parasite wrapped tightly around Loeb's heart. The parasite could not be removed, as it would tighten when it was even touched. Walter Bishop was able to determine that the parasite was man-made. A man who worked for Z.F.T., David Robert Jones, was suspected to have the cure for the parasite, but he would not give it unless he was given the correct answer to the question "Where does the gentleman live?" After the answer was found to be "Little Hill," he gave Olivia the genetic information necessary to kill the parasite, saving Loeb's life. However, Loeb and his wife Samantha had actually planned the entire thing all alone, with the parasite being Loeb's own doing. Samantha revealed the answer "Little Hill" to Loeb. ("In Which We Meet Mr. Jones")

Loeb enlisted Joanne Ostler to kidnap Ben Stockton, a musical prodigy, in an effort to solve an equation that would allow him to create a device capable of reaching through solid matter. Ostler succeeded, and after confirming the success, Loeb killed her. ("The Equation")

Loeb used this technology to break into bank vaults while assisted by several men, stealing a single safe deposit box each time. The men were able to gather four, though on the fourth robbery one of the men was stuck in a wall, leading Loeb to shoot him dead in order to clear up any loose ends. However, the FBI was still alerted to these dealings, and began an investigation. Using the four safe deposit boxes, the remaining men went to Little Hill Field near Westford, Massachusetts, where they constructed a strange, ring-shaped device. After triangulating specific, highly detailed coordinates, Loeb successfully teleported David Robert Jones from a tiny interview room in Wissenschaft Prison, Germany to Little Hill Field, via the ring shaped device. He also had Olivia captured for delivery to Jones. ("Safe")

He then performed a medical procedure on the abducted Olivia - a procedure later characterized as a 'spinal tap'. After she escaped and returned to work, he was assigned to investigate the abduction he had perpetrated againsted her. Olivia, unaware that Loeb was responsible for the acts against her, was inspired a spot she noticed on his shoes. Olivia visited Loeb's house looking for evidence, where she confronted and killed his wife, Samantha. After he directed his wife to engage and kill Dunham, Loeb fled the Federal Building, leaving no trace of his illegal acts. Unaware that his wife had died, Loeb was lured into an ambush devised by Olivia. As the team of law enforcers captured him, Loeb drew his pistol, and was shot and arrested by Dunham. During interrogation, Olivia revealed that she had killed his wife - he subsequently confessed his involvement, but with a stern warning that his actions in her best interest. ("Bound")

In Ability, while trying to get information on David Robert Jones, Olivia shows to Loeb his transfer papers to Wallens Ridge State Prison. She points out to him, in a likely attempt to get his cooperation in exchange for a better deal, that this facility will not be very pleasant for him. However, Loeb does not provide any information, stating instead that finding Jones will not change anything because "What was written will come to pass". This in turn led Olivia to discover the true meaning of ZFT - "Zerstorung durch Fortschritte der Technologie" - the name of a manuscript that the group considers their bible. The title translates to "Destruction by Advancement of Technology" in English, and Walter later discovers he may be the author. ("Ability")

[edit] Trivia

  • The Official Fringe website at FOX.com refers to this role as MITCHEL Loeb in the Safe episode recap. In his first two appearances, the recap referred to the character as MITCHELL.
  • Closed captioning has only utilized MITCHEL as the first name of Agent Loeb. That was in his first appearance and was contrary to the episode recap.
  • Loeb is referred to as Captain in his first appearance, which fits in with the fact that the heist team he directs in Safe are all former military officers.
  • In his latest appearance, the recap used MITCHEL, while closed captioning had MITCHELL.
