Several members of Fringe Division are FBI Agents. FBI Agents are employees of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. Technically FBI Agents are "Special Agents", but some support personnel may be mistakenly called FBI Agents by those outside the Bureau or Federal government.
FBI Special Agents are responsible for conducting sensitive national security investigations and for enforcing over 300 federal statutes. As an FBI Special Agent you may work on matters including terrorism, foreign counterintelligence, cyber crime, organized crime, white-collar crime, public corruption, civil rights violations, financial crime, bribery, bank robbery, extortion, kidnapping, air piracy, interstate criminal activity, fugitive and drug-trafficking matters, and other violations of federal statutes.
Within the U.S. government, the title of Special Agent is used to describe any federal criminal or non-criminal investigator or detective in the 1811, 1801, 2501, or similar job series as so titled according to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) handbook. Agents are typically educated at least as far as the undergraduate level. Such persons are usually armed and have the power to arrest and conduct investigations into the violation of federal laws.
